Films depicting human sacrifice, money rituals, and smoking have been outlawed in Nigeria.
Speaking on Wednesday, May 22, during a National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood held in Enugu, Shaibu Husseini, the Executive Director and CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), disclosed this information.
“We are facing an industry emergency today that calls for audacious and ambitious actions from all parents, guardians, and stakeholders,” he declared. My predecessor recognized the necessity of incorporating money rituals when he addressed Alhaji Lai Muhammad, the former Minister of Information, about the need to create a supplemental law to restrict the depiction of smoking in Nigerian films. Ritual killings and the glamourization of other crimes are also included in the rule to purify the film industry further.
“Today, I am delighted to announce to you that the regulation has been approved under Section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004 by the Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa,” he continued. The minister has approved the Prohibition of Money Ritual, Ritual Killing, Tobacco, Tobacco Products, Nicotine Product Promotion, and Glamorization Exhibition in Motion Pictures, Music Videos, and Skits Regulations 2024. The authorized copy has also been sent to the Federal Ministry of Justice for the Gazette.
