The movie “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” features a scene where Martin Lawrence’s character repeatedly slaps Will Smith’s character, Mike Lowrey, during a panic episode, which seems to reference Smith’s real-life incident of slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. Critics have noted this as a “direct reference” and a “pop exorcism” that allows Smith to move past the incident. Some have criticized this as a tasteless and predictable attempt to address the Oscar scandal. Despite expressing regret for his actions, Smith was barred from Academy events for ten years after withdrawing from the organization.

The directors of the movie, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, revealed that real-life events inspired the story of the film’s latest installment and that the script was still being revised. They mentioned that there are parallels between real life and the movie’s story, creating a meta experience for the character of Mike Lowrey.
