PJ Morton embarked on an adventurous project, creating an album that is a departure from his usual style. The album, available via Morton Records/EMPIRE, is akin to Paul Simon’s Graceland, as it showcases the five-time Grammy winner’s 30-day journey across Africa, recording the entire album while immersing himself in diverse cultures and communities.

Morton’s journey took him from Cape Town and Johannesburg to Lagos, Nigeria; Accra, Ghana; Cairo, Egypt; and back to South Africa. He made a conscious decision to write and record his vocals while in Africa to capture the raw emotions he was experiencing. The album includes influences from various genres, such as R&B, soul, gospel, pop, and jazz, all infused with African inspiration.

Collaborating with artists like Fireboy DML, Mádé Kuti, Asa, Ndabo Zulu, and Soweto Spiritual Singers, as well as producers P.Priime and The Cavemen, Morton drew inspiration from his travels to create tracks like “Smoke & Mirrors,” “Count On Me,” and “Simunye (We Are One).”

In addition to his musical endeavors, PJ Morton also celebrates the launch of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disney World. He is the first black composer to develop music for a Disney attraction. Furthermore, Morton’s memoir, “Saturday Night, Sunday Morning,” will be published this autumn, chronicling his career and personal journey.

PJ Morton will kick off a global tour with stops across North America, including performances at iconic venues such as NYC’s Beacon Theatre, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, and LA’s The Wiltern.

The Cape Town to Cairo playlist includes the following songs: “Smoke & Mirrors,” “Count On Me” with Fireboy DML and Mádé Kuti, “Please Be Who You Are,” “Thank You,” “I Found You,” “Home Again,” “Simunye (We Are One)” with Soweto Spiritual Singers, and “All The Dreamers” featuring Asa & Ndabo Zulu.
