The Hennessy Africa Cypher 2024 is an 8-minute showcase of masterful wordplay and distinct rap style. It was published in late June and is one of the most eagerly anticipated yearly releases for hip-hop and rap fans.

The Cypher is set in Lagos, Nigeria, a nation known for providing a stage for exceptional talent in the African music scene. It features six well-known figures from the rap scene on the continent: Maglera Doe Boy, Didi B, Young Lunya, Khaligraph Jones, Ladipoe, and Sarkodie. According to Julie Nollet, global chief marketing officer for Hennessy, the Cypher is about poetry, community, inspiration, and creativity, fueling the dreams of those honing their craft. It’s much more than just a collaboration of styles and skills. Hennessy has a long history of ties to various musical genres, making it fitting to honor African culture through a genre that upholds similar ideals of development and tolerance.

Maglera Doe Boy from South Africa shares his insightful poetry with the Cypher. In 2022, he gained recognition for his highly praised project, Diaspora. This year, he collaborated with award-winning rapper K.O. on a new song titled “Let Me Cook.”

Didi B of Cote d’Ivoire made history as the first rapper from the country to pack the Olympia Music Hall in Paris. His album Before Olympia was made available in February 2024.

Nigerian poet Ladipoe recently released his song “Hallelujah,” featuring Rozzz & Morrelo. Also included is Sarkodie, the most decorated hip-hop musician in Africa, whose “Championship Mixtape” was released in late May 2024.

Kenya’s Khaligraph Jones adds his distinct style and stirring lyrics to the Cypher, while Tanzania’s Young Lunya, the first hip-hop artist from Tanzania to be signed to the Sony Music Entertainment Africa label, curates rap songs using Kiswahili.

Each of the six rappers shares their real stories while displaying their individuality in thoughtfully written rhymes that highlight variety and inventiveness.

The Cypher is set in a train station in Lagos, in typical Hennessy fashion, symbolizing the brand’s spirit of adventure and audacity. Hennessy aims to elevate the Cypher to unprecedented levels by placing it on the playlists of TV networks, digital service providers, and music streaming platforms like Apple and Spotify.

Hennessy’s goal is to support and develop talent in the hip-hop scene by continuously highlighting its connections to urban culture and nurturing worthy artists who push the envelope of creativity. The brand’s influence links musicians from different generations and a wider range of musical genres, including hip hop, rap, Afrobeats, Afropop, and Amapiano.

The Hennessy Africa Cypher 2024 is poised to establish a legacy of long-lasting conversations about “paying it forward” to the African hip-hop scene.
